Lefthanders Day

August 13

What is Left Handers Day?

Alright, lefties, today is your day to grab your left handed gear and rise up! Today we celebrate you! And to make the celebration a little fun, we will also make it a bit of a “Backward Day”. Check out our ways to celebrate below.

Left-Handers Day is a fun and fascinating celebration dedicated to the roughly 10% of the population who lead with their left hand! Celebrated every year on August 13th, it’s all about recognizing what makes left-handed people unique—and shining a light on the little challenges they face in a mostly right-handed world.

This day celebrates lefties for being a little different (in the best way). From writing styles to sports skills, left-handed people often do things just a bit…backwards compared to the majority.

Why does it exist?

Left-Handers Day was created to bring attention to the fact that most tools and environments are designed for right-handed people. Think about:

  • Scissors
  • Spiral notebooks
  • Desks in classrooms
  • Even measuring cups and can openers

Ways To Celebrate

1. Host a “Backward Day” Challenge

  • If you’re right-handed, switch things up
  • Write, eat, brush your teeth, or use your phone with your left hand
  • Flip everyday tasks for fun
  • Try eating, texting, or even pouring drinks left-handed
  • Expect lots of laughs and a few spills

2. Explore Left-Handed Gadgets

  • Check out lefty-friendly tools like scissors, notebooks, or mugs
  • Appreciate how much design usually favors right-handed people
  • Bonus: gift something cool to a lefty friend

3. Get Creative (Lefty Style)

  • Draw, paint, or doodle using your left hand
  • Compare results—abstract art guaranteed!
  • Make it a fun challenge with friends

4. Play Left-Handed Games

  • Try card games, board games, or video games using only your left hand
  • Add a competitive twist—who adapts fastest?

5. Celebrate Your Lefty Pride

  • Share a photo of your left-handed skills
  • Post something like “Left is right today!”
  • Give a shoutout to your fellow lefties

6. Learn Fun Lefty Facts

  • Only about 10% of people are left-handed
  • Many famous artists, athletes, and leaders are lefties (Barack Obama, Oprah, Lady Gaga, and so many more!)
  • Left-handed brains may process things a bit differently

7. Give Lefties the Spotlight

  • Let left-handed friends or family lead activities
  • Ask about their experiences (funny or frustrating!)
  • Celebrate what makes them unique
