National Aviation Day

August 19

What is National Aviation Day?

National Aviation Day is basically a birthday party… but for humans learning how to defy gravity (no cape required).

Every year on August 19th—it honors aviation pioneer Orville Wright—this day is all about the magic, madness, and “HOW are we in the air right now?!” moments of flight.

It’s a day to celebrate everything that flies (on purpose): airplanes, helicopters, jets, and the brilliant minds who made it all possible. From the first wobbly flights at Kitty Hawk to modern jets cruising above the clouds, it’s a tribute to human curiosity and courage.

Ways to Celebrate

1. Host a “First-Class” Movie Night

Watch aviation favorites like Top Gun, The Aviator, or Airplane!.
Serve classic airplane snacks—pretzels, cookies, and mini drinks—and announce “boarding” before the movie starts for extra fun.

2. Dress the Part

Break out aviator sunglasses, scarves, or a DIY captain’s hat. Whether you go full pilot or flight attendant chic, it’s an easy way to get into the spirit.

3. Paper Airplane Contest

Challenge friends, family, or coworkers to build the ultimate paper airplane.
Create categories like:

  • Longest flight
  • Best design
  • Most “creative landing” (aka crash)

4. Plan Your Dream Trip

Use the day as an excuse to map out a future adventure. Pick a destination, look up flights, and build a bucket list—even if it’s just for fun (for now). Use Trip.com to save money and earn travel rewards

5. Track Flights in Real Time

Download an app like Flightradar24 and see what planes are flying overhead. It’s a surprisingly cool way to connect with the world.

6. Go Plane Spotting

Find a safe spot near an airport or open area and watch planes take off and land. Bring snacks, relax, and enjoy the simple thrill of flight.

7. Learn & Share Aviation Trivia

Impress your friends with fun facts like:

  • Why airplane windows are rounded
  • How pilots communicate mid-flight
  • What causes turbulence

Turn it into a mini trivia game if you’re with a group.

7. Throw an Aviation-Themed Party

Ideas include:

  • “Boarding pass” invitations
  • Snacks labeled as in-flight meals
  • A playlist with travel-themed songs
  • A mock “departure board” for laughs

8. Send a Travel-Inspired Message

Text or email a friend something like:
“Wishing you clear skies and smooth landings today”
It’s simple, fun, and totally on theme.
