Presidential Joke Day

August 11

What is Presidential Joke Day?

Presidential Joke Day is a lighthearted holiday that proves even the most serious leaders can have a sense of humor! Celebrated every year on August 11th, it’s all about laughs, funny moments in politics, and remembering that sometimes…a joke can make history.

This quirky day is inspired by a famously awkward (and accidentally hilarious) moment from Ronald Reagan in 1984. During a microphone test before a speech, he joked:

“My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you today that I’ve signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.”

Yikes!

The joke wasn’t meant for broadcast…but it got out—and instantly became one of the most memorable presidential “oops” moments ever.

Why this day exists

Presidential Joke Day reminds us that:

  • Even world leaders have funny moments
  • Humor and politics often go hand in hand
  • Laughter can break tension—even in serious spaces

8 ways to celebrate

1. Host a Joke Night

  • Invite friends or family to share their best (clean!) jokes
  • Add a “presidential twist” with leadership or history-themed humor
  • Vote for “Funniest Joke” or “Best Delivery”

2. Share Your Favorite Political Humor

  • Post a funny quote, meme, or joke
  • Keep it lighthearted and good-natured
  • Caption idea: “Even leaders need a laugh!”

3. Watch Comedy with a Political Twist

  • Enjoy stand-up specials or comedy sketches
  • Look for shows that mix humor with current events (in a fun way)
  • Make it a cozy movie night with snacks

4. Play a “Presidential Trivia + Jokes” Game

  • Mix history with humor
  • Example: share a fact, then follow it with a joke
  • Great for groups or family game night

5. Do a Funny “Press Conference” Skit

  • Pretend you’re giving a serious speech…that turns silly
  • Have others ask ridiculous questions
  • The more dramatic, the better

6. Write Your Own “Presidential Joke”

  • Come up with a playful, fictional “announcement”
  • Keep it obviously humorous (no accidental hot mic moments!)
  • Share it with friends or online

7. Recreate the Famous Moment

  • Lightly reenact the famous mic-check joke from Ronald Reagan
  • Add your own modern, harmless twist
  • It’s history…with humor

8. Keep It Positive

  • Focus on jokes that bring people together
  • Avoid anything too harsh or divisive
  • The goal is laughs, not arguments
